Today, Sunday, I don’t want to write.
I want to play with genealogy.
Specifically I want to explore our Kading family line, back into Germany, since we don’t seem to know more than they came from ‘the region of Pomerania’, which is just a ridiculously broad area.
So, I want to do that.
But here I am. On the couch. With my decaf coffee and almond milk creamer (rock and roll!)
It’s 9am on Sunday. It’s the third day of my 30 day writing challenge.
True, I’m only accountable to myself. No one else will know if I miss a day. But I’ll know.
And anyway, I want the outcome: I want to be unstuck and in the flow. So this writing daily practice is worth it.
I pull a card as a writing prompt. Ten of Bows, Responsibility.
Bows are the suit of fire, of creativity, of enterprise and making things happen.
In the picture on this card, we’re burdened with bows, carrying them up to our tribe gathered around a fire, at the end of a long and winding path.
How very apt.
Creativity often feels that way, doesn’t it?
Sometimes the creative work you do is for you. It’s fun and easy and playful and you do it just because.
But other times, you don’t feel like it.
And the mark of a pro is that you do it anyway. (Hat tip, Stephen Pressfield)
Maybe ‘pro’ doesn’t feel like the right word. But if you have fully committed to your mission and purpose in the world, you know you just need to do the work.
Even when you don’t feel like it.
Even when it’s not convenient.
Even when it feels heavy and hard.
Show up, and do it first thing.
So here I am just doing the work, to let it get unstuck and let it flow.
And then… genealogy.
* * *
The previous line was supposed to be the end of my writing for the day. It felt like a good ending to that little essay.
But of course, as I went to close this doc, suddenly my gremlin appeared.
“What? That’s it? You think that really counts as writing for the day?”
That felt too easy.
It isn’t long enough
You can’t just write out whatever is in your head and assume that’s good enough.
Is it a finished piece?
Does writing ABOUT writing count? C’mon, that’s too obvious and easy! Real writing is supposed to have a deep thought or insight if it’s going to be good.
“Gremlin, thank you for your opinion and for looking out for me. But it doesn’t have to be hard to count. So today’s writing counts. Day 3 of 30 day challenge complete”
Now let’s go play. Kading’s, here I come!
