This focus on providing high-quality content should also carry through to your Instagram bio.
This small block of text is your first chance to show potential customers your brand. With the average person only spending 3-6 seconds looking at your bio, you need eye-catching content that will immediately capture their attention. Interesting Instagram bios provide customers with the necessary nudge to click-through to your website.
Still struggling to craft the perfect bio? Here are six simple steps you can take to find Instagram success. Even if you’re already active on Instagram, use this checkpoints to evaluate your account’s impact.
1. Choose an optimal username
Your Instagram name is your customer’s first clue as to what they can expect from your account. When deciding on which name works best for your account, consider using something that truly captures your brand. If it’s available, try using your name or the name of your business.
Take the guesswork out of your customer’s experience, and try to select a name that is easy to find. Avoid using numbers, if possible, because it can often make your account more difficult to find. To optimize brand recognition and cross-promotion across your different social media platforms, try to select a username that matches your other handles.
If none of these approaches work, there are a few other tweaks you can make. Try adding:
- Middle initial
- Extra letter
- Additional letters
- Words such as “IAM” or “dotcome” to the beginning or end
Don’t forget, you can change your username in the future if you feel like it doesn’t fit your brand.
2. Create an eye-catching avatar
Having a picture perfect Instagram account starts with an eye-catching avatar. If you are the face of your brand, consider investing in a professional photo.
Remember, you want users to know that your brand is fun and energetic, so try to use an image that has a pop of color or a brand-relevant prop. This is your opportunity to make your brand more personable, and let your customers know what makes you different from your competition.
Is your account more focused on products and services? Use a high-quality image of your products or your brand’s logo. Either way, make sure that your avatar is something that will be easily recognized by your customers.
3. Make interesting bio content
Aside from your username and avatar, your bio’s content is the next step in providing insight into what makes your brand different. You only have 33 words to catch your user’s attention, so you have to make them count.
Use unique keywords that are easily searchable. For example, if your business is focused on healthy living you would use keywords like health coach, wellness coach, nutritionist, vegan, vegetarian, and raw food.
Emojis are also a great way to share your brand, and grab the attention of your audience. While the possibilities seem limitless, try to focus on the emojis that are most closely aligned with your business. For example, if you are a nutritionist focused on helping people eat healthier you might use apples or pineapples. Even better, emojis are also searchable in the explore tab.
4. Add your personality in your bio description
Once you have an interesting subtitle, it’s time to spice up your bio. Your bio is like the meat of a sandwich, so you want to make sure it’s something that your customers will find appetizing. The content you share, and the impression you make, can have a big impact on the relationship you build with your customer.
You only have 150 characters, so get creative. Avoid wordiness or full sentences. Instead, aim to be punchy and interesting. Although your bio will evolve as your business grows and changes, it should always be clear and concise.
5. Create a clear call-to-action
It’s great if people like your content, but are you providing them with a clear call-to-action? A good call-to-action tells customers exactly what you want them to do. The link in your bio is your opportunity to nudge customers to your next step.

If you communicate via email or phone, be sure that info is also in your bio. If you feel like your contact info is being buried underneath your business description, add an arrow or finger pointing to the important information.
6. Make your URL count
Unlike other social media platforms, Instagram only allows you to have one live link. While this helps to cut down on spam and sales-focused posts, it’s imperative that you track and change the link.
Gain insights into your link’s metrics by creating a custom Bit.ly. These customizable links allow you to more accurately track the number of clicks your link receives, and data on your customer’s click habits.
